A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
