Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
